How Urine Drug Testing Works
Urine drug testing is a straightforward and efficient method for detecting the presence of drugs and their metabolites in the body. Here’s a brief overview of the process:
Collection
A sample of urine is collected in a sterile container, or a drug test cup, in a controlled environment. This ensures the sample is not contaminated.
Testing
The sample is then analysed. On-site drug test cups can give results in just 5 minutes. If this initial test indicates the presence of drugs, confirmatory testing may be conducted by sending the sample to the laboratory.
Interpretation
Laboratory confirmation test results are provided with a detailed interpretation, which can be followed up by a medical review officer where required. This is important where medication is detected at higher-than-normal levels.
This method is highly effective for routine screening and can detect a range of substances quickly and accurately. Urine drug tests detect most drugs for around 2 to 4 days, with some drugs lasting slightly longer. For details on specific drugs, please visit our drug information page, which breaks down the details for each of the drugs.
Oral fluid testing or Saliva Drug Tests tend to only detect drugs for around 24 hours, so most employers rely on urine drug testing. There are exceptions to this, however, such as remote sites where toilet facilities are harder to access.
